Field Test

Fido, come!

Each team must pass a field test in the presence of distractions.

Who can take the field test?

Our teams are attainable no matter breed, age, size, or experience level. You and your dog(s) need NO prior titles, certification, or special training to be eligible. Any Allendale resident may register their dog(s) to take the field test.

What does the field test encompass?

The field test is designed by professional dog trainers with input from the AVGP committee. It assesses the core set of skills necessary to patrol on the AVPG as outlined in our team standard. We are looking for teams who can, in the presence of distractions, maintain control and demonstrate responsible dog ownership.

Sit Means Sit

While we don’t expect perfection at the test and commands may be repeated, we need to see that commands are understood by your dog(s) and reliably followed.

Responsibility

Do you always carry your leash and extra poop bags? If you run into a situation where a person is afraid of dogs, what do you say or do?

Example Test

  1. Walk on-leash
  2. Walk off-leash
  3. Stay (down/sit/stand)
  4. Recall (come)
  5. Walk in circle off-leash
  6. Put leash on, then exit

Prospective Handler Self-Test

  • Am I willing to perform a service for the community of Allendale?
  • Do I consider myself a responsible dog owner?
  • Do I understand that the parks patrolled are intended for use by people first (i.e. they are not “dog parks”)?
  • Can I reliably recall and control my dog off-leash even when distractions are present?

If you answered “yes” to all of the questions above, you’re ready to apply!
